This is the Old Veteran Cypress tree on the North Shore Trail of the Point Lobos State Natural Reserve. It has been carbon dated to approximately one thousand years old. The hillside has eroded beneath it exposing its root structure (click on the image to see it better). But it still sits there magnificently. The more I look at this image, the more I expect to see a gnome peeking out from around the trunk of the tree.

This tree is lush and gnarled and weathered and fragile and seems impossibly old. A beautiful shot.
Thank you Robin
The erosion is sad but it’s also exposed the beautiful structure of the whole tree. Love how the roots “mirror” the branches. Great shot, now if only the gnome would reveal himself.
OK, new desktop!
Thanks Brendon-
I’m glad to be providing you with regularly changeable desktops. I take it as a compliment.
hoping to see a gnome or make one out somewhere too but no.
beautiful picture
I know he’s there. We just have to find him.
Love it! I didn’t know it was that old. Thank you!
Thanks Susan
