The interior of the Mission is very beautiful. The artwork and woodworking are delicate and intricate with very rich colors. There is a main chapel in the center and two side chapels. This is one of the side chapels. The interior is also undergoing restoration efforts and it was being worked on while we there. It was interesting to watch it being done. Mission San Xavier del Bac is a National Historic Landmark founded as a Catholic mission by Father Eusebio Kino in 1692. In 1767 the Jesuits were expelled from New Spain and Spanish Franciscans took over the Mission in 1768. Construction of the current church began in 1783 and was completed in 1797. It’s the oldest intact European structure in Arizona, the church’s interior is filled with beautiful original statuary and mural paintings. It retains its original purpose of ministering to the religious needs of its parishioners.

It is constructed of low-fire clay brick, stone and lime mortor, the entire structure is roofed with masonary vaults, making it unique among Spanish Colonial buildings within U. S. borders. An earthquake in 1887 knocked down the mortuary wall and damaged parts of the church. Extensive repairs began in 1905. Restoration efforts have continued over the years. As you can see in this image, the exterior is only about 50 percent restored.

For this photo, I’m still at the Shady Dell Trailer Park. It was just sitting in the back behind most of the trailer “rooms”. The word “Richfield” is painted on the front part of the truck’s roof, just above the windshield. I liked the way the paint had worn off over the years and it was a classic flat-bed style truck.

Here is a great example of the “rooms” at the Shady Dell Motel in Bisbee, AZ. It’s a small travel trailer that was very common in the 1950’s and 1960’s. At the Shady Dell, it’s one of several of this size, with other, much larger ones available to stay in.
