Mount Sopris, Colorado

Mount Sopris is located at the northwest end of the Elk Mountains in western Colorado.

We just returned from a fun trip to Carbondale, Lafayette and Boulder Colorado for a family reunion and to spend time exploring Colorado with Cathleen’s cousins. The trip started in Carbondale and we stayed with one of her cousins Gary, and his wife Lori. They built a magnificent home in Carbondale with a living room window that frames Mount Sopris when you enter the house. This photograph was taken the first morning after we arrived. I came downstairs, walked outside in the back and this is what I saw. I’ve seen photographs of the mountain in winter, covered with snow, and it’s even more beautiful. More photos from Colorado to come over the next few weeks.

According to Wikipedia, Mount Sopris is located at the northwest end of the Elk Mountains in western Colorado south of Carbondale. It has two summits that are one-half mile apart and have exactly the same elevation of 12,965 feet. It’s named for Richard Sopris the former mayor of Denver and part of the first European expedition in the Roaring Fork Valley beneath the mountain.

Hiding in the Savanna Grass

A Baby Cheetah Hiding in the Savanna Grass

In Kenya, we saw quite a few Cheetah, including some families with very young cubs. The savanna’s tall grass provides excellent cover for young Cheetahs as the color of their fur and their spots blend well with the grass to provide good camouflage for them. In the case of this young Cheetah, our Land Cruiser almost ran over it because it was so well hidden.

Savanna - Rays Form Above

Savanna – Rays Form Above

I mentioned in my last post, one of the most beautiful parts of Kenya and Tanzania was the grass on the savanna. Recently, I’ve been inspired to create a Savanna Collection that shows how the savanna interacts with nature through plants, animals, people, the sun and the weather.

Quite honestly, we had sunny days and very few clouds on this trip (much to my photographic dismay). This was one of the only cloudy days we encountered on the trip. Fortunately, the clouds started to part and allowed these beautiful sun rays to pass through and illuminate the savanna grass. This was taken on the Masai mara in Kenya.

Be sure to click on the image to enlarge it. It really improves the view.

Lone Acacia

Acacia Tree on the Savannah – Masai Mara, Kenya

Two of the many things I loved about Kenya and Tanzania were the Acacia trees and the color of the savanna grass. What made each more beautiful was that they were usually together, adding to the beauty of one another. This image was taken on the Masai Mara. It was #1241 of the second day of our three week trip in Africa (I reset the camera to #1 at the start of the trip). There was something very peaceful about the tall grasses swaying with the wind and the vast open space we were surrounded by. It really was the most wonderful trip.

The Rising Moon

The Rising Super Moon

This is another image of the Super Moon as it was rising through the clouds. I particularly liked the placement of the moon in this shot, down into one corner. It presents the sky and clouds as expansive relative to the the moon.
