Aspen Leaves

Aspen leaves alongside the road to Rocky Mountain National Park near Boulder

One of the many beautiful sights in Colorado were the Aspen trees, especially their leaves. We were on a drive up to Rocky Mountain National Park with Cathleen’s cousin Bob and we stopped at a look out. While the scene of the valley below surrounded by mountains was beautiful, I was fascinated by the Aspen trees and their leaves being illuminated by the sunlight. This image in color is pretty but I felt that, in black and white with a slight sepia tone, it accentuated the architecture of the leaves rather than their color. I do, however, look forward to returning some year in the fall to spend time photographing the Aspens changing color as they are amazingly beautiful when they do.

Carbondale House

The view as you enter the front door of Gary and Lori’s house in Carbondale, CO.

One of the most beautiful sites on our Colorado trip was opening the front door, walking into the living room of Gary and Lori’s home in Carbondale and seeing Mount Sopris framed by the large picture window in the living room. I just stopped and stared totally in awe of this view. Of course, that was the goal when they designed this house. I think they surpassed their goal!

The Maroon Bells Colorado

The Maroon Bells are two peaks in the Elk Mountains of Colorado.

The Maroon Bells are two peaks located in the Elk Mountains. They’re named Maroon Peak and North Maroon Peak, and they’re separated by about one-third of a mile. They’re in Colorado, 10 miles from Aspen, and both peaks are “fourteeners” (mountains that exceed 14,000 feet). Colorado has the majority of fourteeners in North America. This photo was taken from Maroon Creek Valley, one of the most famous scenes in Colorado. It was a wonderful location to hike through and have a picnic.

Ashcroft Hotel

Ashcroft Hotel – Ashcroft Ghost Town – Ashcroft, Colorado

Ashcroft, a Ghost Town, is 10 miles south of Aspen, Colorado and was originally known as Castle Forks City in 1880. It was a silver mining town and was renamed Ashcroft in 1882. By 1885, the town was the home to about 3,500 residents, six hotels and 20 saloons. The town was booming very quickly and , per Wikipedia, went bust also very quickly because the silver deposits turned out to be very shallow. In 1884, another rich silver deposit was located, but it was near Aspen and this proved to be  the end for Ashcroft as residents began moving to Aspen.

The image below is a close up view of the wooden side boards in this building.

Horses in Snowmass

Horses graze near Watson Divide Road in Snowmass, Colorado

Gary took us on a ride through an area of the Colorado countryside in the Snowmass, Colorado. We were on a narrow stretch of Watson Divide Road and came around a bend and this gorgeous valley was there before us. We stopped and I got out to take some photographs. I loved seeing this group of horses there just above the meadow and the array of colors we were presented with. It was a lot of fun to take this photograph.
