This ground squirrel was just coming out of his burrow when he looked up having heard a sound. The photo was taken with a Canon EOS 40D, EF70-200mm f/4L IS lens, 1/500 sec at f/4, ISO 100 on SanDisk Extreme IV Digital Film. The image was post-processed with Nik Silver Efex Pro 2.

Nice shot! The fur detail is wonderful. This little guy is most definitely ready for winter.
Thanks Robin.
I have a question. The fur detail is very cool. In looking close up at the fur, I noticed that when I looked at the image straight on, the image has a slight sepia cast. But if I look at it from an angle I still get the dimensionality but the sepia cast is gone. Is this an effect of the HD, the post-processing or the monitor?
This was not an HDR photo with multiple exposures. It was a single exposure and the only processing was making it black + white with a little touch of sepia tone. I’m not sure why it might appear without the sepia when you look at it from an angle. It must have something to do with the monitor I guess. I think I got such good detail because it was pretty close to me and I was using my telephoto lens as well.
One very FAT squirrel!
I love all of your animal shots. They capture a piece of their personalities better than most.
Thanks… I had fun taking photos of this squirrel running around.
